Why are modular homes more hurricane resistant and why are they better than a house built by hand on my lot ?
Kitty - Lakeview
NOTE: This was a question I received recently and I thought it a good way to open this blog.
My answer:
Modular homes are built to a national building standard (by law) that many times is a higher standard than some local building codes. By using modern technology & computer design, they can be with a quality control that is more difficult to achieve with site built houses. Modular homes are built using hurricane fasteners and straps; using more wood & hardware than most site built houses.
Built indoors, with several hundred man hours of engineering & craftsmanship, you get a much better built home. Before it's finished & delivered, it passes many levels of code inspections to insure quality construction from foundation to roof, electrical, plumbing etc.

Are all modular homes built the same way ?
it seems like some are better than others. sort of like cars, they all run and do the job. just some better than others.

Correct on the "some better than others" comment. All modulars must meet certain standards but then you get into quality of material, customization, service and warranty offered.
We have a 10 year warranty on the homes we build. Most other companies offer 1 year or so. I will have one for my home in Lakeview.
I've heard that modulars will take up to about 150 mile winds. Don't know how. Must be in the hardware & screws they use to put them together.
